JOURNALISM EXPERIENCE

Hood County News, Granbury, TX.
Staff Writer, December 2004 to September 2005

I covered four law enforcement agencies, three courts, 11 fire departments and one city council. I was responsible for finding my own stories and I take my own pictures. This is a 15,000 circulation tri-weekly. Left to move back to Michigan.

I started out covering Hood County for this 450,000 circulation daily until I took a full-time job with the Hood County News.

Weatherford Democrat, Weatherford, TX.
Staff Writer, Jan. 2003 to Sept. 2003

Cops and courts reporter covering two courts, seven law enforcement agencies, one fire department and 20 volunteer fire departments. I was responsible for finding my own stories and did my own photography. I also covered several feature stories. Averaged three stories a day, with nearly all appearing on the front page of this 10,000 circulation daily. I reluctantly left to care for my mother in Michigan.

Staff Writer, Sept. 1998 to Jan. 2001, Oct. 2001 to Jan. 2003

Cops and courts reporter covering two police departments, a sheriff’s department, three courts and two fire departments. I covered many high profile stories and I was responsible for finding my own stories. I also did my own photography. Averaged 12 stories a week at this 80,000 bi-weekly. I left the first time to work for the Michigan Real Estate Journal and the second time to take a daily job in Weatherford, Texas.

Covered commercial real estate in Michigan and did my own photography. I was recruited by the editor, Gary Hoffman, after he saw some of my stories in the Dearborn Times-Herald. While the salary was double that of The Times Herald, I left because I missed covering police and courts.

Covered county commissioners, city council and two school districts in Gladwin County, which consists of two cities and 12 townships. I turned in four to 10 stories a week, which I was responsible for finding, and I occasionally had front page stories in this 20,000 circulation daily. I left when I moved to Texas.

West Valley News, Flint, MI.
Staff Writer, Aug. 1996 to March 1998

Covered two school districts and two police departments in the Flint Township and Swartz Creek communities. I also reported on Flint, Clayton and Mundy townships board meetings along with Swartz Creek and Gaines city council meetings. I left to take a stringer job with The Midland Daily News.

Reported on education and political issues in White Lake Township for the weekly publication. Also did an in-depth feature monthly. I left to take a job at The West Valley News.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:I have an incessant curiosity, strong writing and communication skills and I strive to deliver articulate, balanced and accurate articles. I’m reliable, self-motivated, love challenges and I’m able to work on strict deadlines. I have filed numerous FOI requests in my career and have a solid understanding of my rights pertaining to such requests. In addition, I have strong photography skills and I own a Pentax K-1000 35 mm, a Minolta 35 mm with a telephoto lens, and a digital Nikon 5700. I’m also familiar with Photoshop, NewsEditPro, and Quark Express.
I also have excellent computer skills, I can navigate a Mac and PC and various programs.
